Mikel Arteta provides injury updates ahead of Preston game

Arsenal are away to Preston North End on Wednesday night in their Round four League Cup tie.

The Gunners beat Bolton Wanderers in the previous round, with Mikel Arteta fielding a team of multiple academy players. Ethan Nwaneri scored a brace, and Josh Nichols, Jack Porter and Myles Lewis-Skelly all featured in the 5-1 win.

Arsenal are without a win in their last two Premier League games after being held to a 2-2 draw at the Emirates by Liverpool.

Bukayo Saka, who scored the opener on Sunday, was disappointed that Arsenal did not come away with a win:

“We’re disappointed. I feel like we didn’t show our best selves for 90 minutes and it cost us in the end. We believe we should have won it.”

While Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk, was happy that the Reds escaped with a draw.

On Sunday, Gabriel was taken off just after half time with what seemed to be a knee problem. Jurrien Timber and Bukayo Saka who started the game, were also taken off late in the second half.

Mikel Arteta says there are no new serious injury concerns:

“Jurrien is fine,” he said. “He was very tired, he had been out for a while and could not continue the game but there is no new injury there.

“[Riccardo] will be out for a few weeks I’d say.

“[Martin] has been on the grass for a few weeks, but there are still a few boxes to tick. How fast we can do that last stage of the rehab is a question we have to answer when we have players around and he starts competing with the team, something he hasn’t done yet.

“Hopefully he’ll be back [before the international break], but we’ll have to see how it goes.”

The Arsenal boss also added that Gabriel is being assessed, but the injury does not look serious.

“We are still assessing him, it doesn’t look bad at all,” Mikel explained. “He was much better than expected, so hopefully he’ll be fine.”

William Saliba will be available after serving his one match suspension for the red card against Bournemouth. With their recent returns to first team action, Timber and Saka might be given a rest on Wednesday night.
