Arsenal are currently searching for options to improve their squad as Mikel Arteta looks to make the Gunners squad one of the best teams in Europe.
Last year, the lack of quality depth cost the gunners towards the end of the season. Gabriel Martinelli had a poor season, and aside Leandro Trossard, there were no alternatives in the team. Thomas Partey also missed a lot of football last year and Arsenal struggled without his passing abilities.
Mikel Arteta has added Mikel Merino this summer, but the Gunners are looking to add more players in January and potentially next summer.
Mikel Arteta sets sights on 21-year old attacking midfielder
According to Fichajes, Arsenal are interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez. The report claims Mikel Arteta has personally asked for the player. The Spaniard has seen his playing time under Hansi Flick drop with the arrival of Dani Olmo, who plays in the same position.
Last season, Fermin Lopez scored eight goals in his first senior season with the club. Fermin’s qualities make him a perfect back up for Martin Odegaard in midfield; the Spaniard brings a bit of creativity and goal scoring.
Former Barcelona coach, and Mikel Arteta’s former teammate, Xavi was a big fan of the youngster:
“He is a talented footballer,”
“He knows how to leak the last pass, which is what he really lacked last season.
“He scored a worldie with his left foot and then assisted Ferran with the right foot, so he can use both feet. He also can play in multiple roles from a winger to a central midfielder. This whole package is not easy to find. I like him a lot. He is full of personality.”
A player of that profile is perfect for Arsenal; Mikel Arteta’s current midfield options are players who specialize in build up and defensive ability.
Will Spanish star leave Barcelona?
It is very difficult to sign Spanish players from Spain. Just this summer, Liverpool and Real Sociedad went back and forth over Martin Zubimendi, who eventually declined a move and a stayed with his boyhood club.
However, one thing may change the youngster’s mind: playing time. Midfield competition at Barcelona is going to get increasingly difficult with the return of Frenkie De Jong from injury. Gavi, Frenkie De Jong, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Fermin Lopez and Pablo Torre will all be competing to play in Hansi Flick’s midfield.
The possible path for Fermin at Arsenal would be selling Fabio Vieira after his loan next summer. But Barcelona value the youngster around £67 million.
