Thoughts on Gunners Playing in the Copa America

Alexis Sanchez

With the season well and truly over, we can now concentrate on the transfer madness and speculation before a new campaign begins with the Community Shield against those Rent Boys. However, there’s the distraction of the Copa America coming up, and Arsenal has it’s contingent in the tournament.

Chile is hosting the South American fiesta this summer and the country would hinge their hopes on Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal’s Player of the Season. The host nation went off to the best possible start in the tournament with a 2-0 win over Ecuador. Champions League finalist, Arturo Vidal, opened the scoring from the spot kick and when Ecuador failed to take the initiative, Alexis teed up Eduardo Vargas that scored the goal to put the game beyond doubt. The game ended on a sour note for Chile as substitute, Matias Fernandez, got sent off for two bookable offences. Chile’s next game of the group comes up against Mexico on Tuesday, June 16, 2015. The final group game for Chile comes up against Bolivia.

Elsewhere, David Ospina will be in goal for Colombia when they take on Venezuela next tomorrow but they will be gearing up for a mouth-watering encounter against Brazil, which serves as a reminder to what both teams did in the 2014 FIFA World Cup last year. Colombia’s final game comes up against Peru.

Sanchez and Ospina would want to go all the way in the Copa America but it’s going to be a challenge for the duo next season, as they won’t have enough preseason under their belt. However, the squad would be strong enough to make up for their absence. Let’s just hope they make it through the tournament unscathed.

I’d be keeping a close eye on both players as the tournament progresses.
