New Deal for Jorginho, and it’s Well Deserved

Jorginho: First Arsenal player breaks silence on controversial Newcastle goal | Evening Standard

I had my reservations of Jorginho when he joined the club a year ago, and after witnessing him play 41 games for the club in the course of 365 days, I have been hugely impressed with his professionalism, technique, experience, influence and how he dictates tempo in the middle of the park. His error in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham left a lot to be desired, but Jorginho has been a part-bit player that has been used to great tactical effect by Mikel Arteta.

With Albert Sambi Lokonga shipped out to Luton Town and Thomas Partey being Thomas Injury Partey, coupled with Mohamed Elneny recuperating from his long term injury layoff, Jorginho has served as the backup for Declan Rice and he has been deployed regularly in the domestic cups and Champions League, but he has featured in some high-profile Premier League games and has been outstanding.

When Jorginho joined Arsenal, he signed a one-and-a-half year deal, with an option of an additional year, and if the Gunners chose not to activate the clause, Jorginho would have been set to leave the club this summer with Elneny. However, it has been reported that Arsenal is interested in renewing Jorginho’s contract, even though free agent lovers, Juventus, are on the prowl. His agent, Joao Santos, commented on his future,

“We will evaluate the proposal that comes to the table and decide for the best.

“Obviously the priority is the renewal with Arsenal because he gets along very well with everyone, but with his contract expiring we hope the team that wants his best comes along.

“I don’t know if it’s for a question of money and strategy but so far no big names in Serie A have shown interest but if we have to play a game I would see it better at Lazio due to the presence of Mr Sarri who knows his characteristics very well but also at Juve where there is a great sporting director like Giuntoli with whom he lived many good years at Napoli.”

I would expect Arsenal to finalize things with Jorginho and I’m sure that the player would want to stay at the club. We will monitor the situation and provide feedback as things progress.
