Arsenal fans were elated with the much-expected announcement of Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino joining the club was made official. Watching the clips on the official clips on the official site and seeing Merino say those nice things made me itch to see him in action, but from the latest reports from Mikel Arteta’s pre-Brighton press conference, Arsenal fans will have to wait a little longer to see their new man in action.
“It’s very unfortunate. Yesterday he had a collision and got a shoulder injury. He’s going to be out for a few weeks. It’s really bad luck and we were all very excited. He was looking very good, he landed on the floor, Gabi went on top of him and it looks like he’s got a small fracture probably. He was in so much pain, so we have to wait and see with the staff to do some more tests to have more conclusive answers.”
With Arsenal set to lock horns with Brighton, as well as two crunch clashes against Tottenham and Manchester City after the international break, having a duel-winning monster like Merino in our ranks would have been very beneficial to the team, but sadly, we will have to wait for the medical staff to give their proper diagnosis of how long Merino will be out for.
Injuries are part and parcel of the game but this one is rather unfortunate, which will hamper his chances of bedding into the squad well and adapting to life in North London. Hopefully, he comes back stronger and we get the best of Merino in the coming weeks.
His injury leaves Arsenal desperately short in midfield, with Arteta having only Declan Rice, Thomas Partey and Jorginho to count on for support in midfield. One can only hope that these players go into the international break and return unscathed after representing their respective nations.
