Burnley arrive at the Emirates Stadium on the back of a terrible run that has seen them lose five games on the trot, which includes four in the Premier League and one in the EFL Cup. Burnley has won only one Premier League game this season, which was against fellow strugglers, Luton Town. Burnley has also lost its opening six home games in the Premier League this season, which is the worst record in that regard.
Arsenal shrugged off the disappointing result against Newcastle with a good win over Sevilla in the Champions League, but there is the business of Burnley to attend to in the Premier League before the next international break. The head to head record between Arsenal and Burnley is commanding with the Gunners undefeated in 17 out of their last 18 games (13 wins and four draws) with Burnley. Arsenal are also unbeaten in 37 home league games against newly promoted opposition since losing 1-0 to Newcastle on 2010 (W32, D5).
To team news, Arsenal would be sweating over the fitness of Eddie Nketiah, Martin Odegaard and the starboy, Bukayo Saka, that had a stormer against Sevilla before picking up a knock. The long term absentees remain Jurrien Timber, Emile Smith Rowe, Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey, who has been confirmed to miss the rest of 2023. Burnley will be without Lyle Foster for the foreseeable future, as he’s suffering from mental health issues. Other Burnley players like Hjalmar Ekdal, Benson Manuel and Michael Obafemi are all absent with fitness issues.
I would expect Arteta to retain the starting XI that cruised through the Sevilla game, unless Martin Odegaard passes a fitness test. Even if Nketiah manages to pass his own fitness test, I believe we are better upfront with Leandro Trossard leading the line, because he’s the closest we have to Gabriel Jesus when he’s on the side. Nketiah was seen in training pictures, so it’s fair to say that he’s fine now.
